Core drill bit size guide

Match the hole to the pipe or duct, leaving a few millimetres to feed it through and seal it. For flues, fans and fire sleeves, always check the manufacturer's recommended hole size before drilling.

Dry or wet drilling?

Dry diamond cores (DCU350, DCU550, DCU750X, PC850 and CCU850X) cut without water, which keeps the job clean indoors when paired with a dust extraction unit. The PC850 also runs from a percussion drill, and the CCU850X is built for reinforced concrete. Wet cores (WCU350, WCU550, WCU750X, WCU850X and WF850X) need a water feed and are the usual choice for heavily reinforced concrete and rig-mounted drilling. The CCW850X semi-wet core needs only a little water.

Which fitting: 1/2" BSP or 1 1/4" UNC?

Most hand-held dry core bits use a 1/2" BSP thread and most wet core bits use 1 1/4" UNC, so check the fitting on the product page. If your drill has a different spindle, such as SDS Plus, a 3-jaw chuck or a Hilti fitting, our core drill adaptors make the connection. Frequently asked questions

What size core drill bit do I need for a 110mm soil pipe?

117mm is a common choice, leaving about 3.5mm clearance each side of the pipe. Choose 127mm if you want more room to line up and seal it. Compare 117mm core drill bits and 127mm core drill bits.

What size core bit do I need for a 100mm extractor fan?

A 107mm core leaves about 3.5mm around a 100mm duct, enough to feed it through and seal it. See 107mm core drill bits, and check the fan manufacturer's instructions first.

Can I use a diamond core drill bit in an SDS drill?

Yes, with an SDS Plus adaptor and the hammer action switched off, so the drill runs on rotation only. The PC850 is designed to run on percussion drills with percussion on, but not in SDS hammer mode.

Should I drill wet or dry?

Drill dry indoors in brick, block and most concrete, with dust extraction. Drill wet in heavily reinforced concrete and very hard materials, where the water cools the diamond segments and flushes out the slurry.

How do I stop the core bit skidding when I start the hole?

Fit a pilot drill bit through the centre of the core so it locates the hole and stops the bit skidding on the surface. Many Marcrist cores also have rooftop segments that make starting easier.
