The development of diamond drill bits for tiles and porcelain stoneware

The carbide arrowhead drill was one of the first tile and glass drills on the market. If you use the hardness scale of the Mohs table as a guide, a carbide drill can theoretically drill all tiles, including fine stoneware tiles. Drilling is possible in practice, but you have to do without an appropriate or usual service life, speed and a presentable result. The result of the market needs a special tile drill.

So that the manufacturer deal with the hardest mineral for processing - the diamond. From then on there were diamond core bits and diamond drill bits for tiles, including porcelain stoneware, with good to excellent service lives and speeds, etc.

Types of tile drills

The market now offers selected porcelain stoneware drill bits. In addition, other professional tile drills are offered for standardized work, such as laying tiles, for special tasks with very hard tiles.

The distinguishing features are defined by the material to be processed, the place of use in the kitchen or bathroom, for example, the machine, requirements for work progress and quality, etc. These features determine the shape, segment type, connection, and performance parameters, among other things.

Otherwise, diamond drill bits, for example, can quickly become blunt or the tip can break off.

Which drill bit for tiles?

There are exactly two categories:

the diamond tile drill bit and the carbide tile drill bit, also known as the glass drill bit.

The material properties decide on the perfect selection of the drill.

Note:

  • Carbide tile drill bit for: soft to medium-hard glass and ceramic tiles
  • Mirror glass

Both drill types drill the same materials but differ in their quality characteristics, including speed and service life. In addition, the HM drill is often much easier for the beginner.

Tile drill with diamond

Components

  • turned body made of tool steel
  • Drill headset with a diamond mixture

The mixture is firmly connected to the carrier body by the vacuum brazing sintering process. As with the HM tile drills, the quality, etc. is related to the choice of raw materials and the manufacturing process of the manufacturer and has a direct effect on the service life, speed and result.

The properties of the mixture and product result from the granulation, as well as the applied mass and its structure.

Tip
  • Note which type of tile you want to work on and the nature of the material.

→ This results in the product

  • Position the drill at an angle (approx. 45°) and at maximum speed on the tile and drill
  • If the tile drill sinks into the material, stand up and continue drilling with a pendulum movement

Tile drill bit set

One set allows you to drill multiple holes in tiles. They usually contain a good mixture for the most common areas of application. From small and medium diameters for furniture etc. to slightly larger diameters, for example, to drill a hole for a socket. A countersink for tiles, then. Usually in Ø 68 mm, 72 mm, and 82 mm. We offer diamond drill bits for tiles with a Ø of up to 130 mm.

Practically, you often get a tile drill set in a case designed for this purpose to protect the somewhat expensive investment.
