What is a diamond cup wheel?

The diamond grinding cups are known as robust masters for rough work on surface processing with enormous removal capacity and long service life.
This is the optimal substrate preparation for further coatings.

The cup wheels become particularly interesting when a large number of square meters e.g. walls and floors etc. have to be mastered.

Diamond cup wheels are used for the following reasons: removing residues, leveling, removing or cleaning. Depending on the application, the mounts, diameter, structure, and properties differ.

Structure of a diamond cup wheel

A diamond cup wheel consists of two elements, the round metal base and the abrasive. The word itself indicates the shape - pot.

The shape is due to the technical application and dust transport. The diamond cup wheel is attached to an angle grinder with a stable quick-clamping nut as a connecting piece. If the mold were flat, the quick-locking nut would prevent the process.

In the best case, the cup wheel lies flat on the surface. Due to the speed and selection of the segment, the chips cannot escape laterally or only with difficulty.

That is why almost all manufacturers produce cup wheels with a hole design, thanks to the natural centrifugal force, the chips escape through the holes.

Segment types of diamond cup wheels

There are mainly two types of segments, the diamond segment and the PKD segment.

Segments with diamond

If you want to grind, the classic cup wheel with a diamond segment is the right choice. They are used on mineral substrates. Sand, clay, or mixtures of substances are among the minerals used in construction. This means concrete, hard screed, mortar and plaster, tile adhesive and granite, etc.

Are you often confronted with materials made of stone and concrete?

With diamond cup wheels, you can process or grind very hard and abrasive materials perfectly or break edges and clean the top.

In practice, one compares the special machine with renovation or refurbishment milling machines made of hard metal. This is also an opportunity to process the mineral substrates in a variety of ways and is recommended for regular use in the commercial sector.

You often want to save costs and have an additional machine, but not do without effective dust extraction.

In the meantime, the manufacturers have upgraded and taken on the needs and requirements in the interior on the subject of “dust”. If you combine a cup wheel with a suitable extraction hood, the problem is averted.

Segment types of a diamond cup wheel

As with other tools, the individual segment shape not only affects the eye but also affects the performance characteristics.

The most common segment types are:

  • T-Segment
  • Roof segment
  • Double row segment
  • Turbo segment

The first three types are usually used for high removal and turbo segmentation for fine sanding.

Not to forget the mixing ratio and the quality of the diamond an important factors for the performance of the cup wheel.

Note:

The more angular the arrangement, the more aggressive the cup wheel

For which work is a diamond cup wheel suitable?

A diamond grinding disc is usually used when it comes to finishing, renovating, preparing, or refining surfaces:

  • Finishing of concrete elements
  • Grinding of concrete parts
  • Sanding weathered old concrete or cement plaster
  • Grind and level the screed
  • Edge breaking - grinding concrete edges
  • deburring
  • Removal of tile and carpet adhesive
  • Sand off paint and finishes
  • Remove rust
  • Smooth rough surfaces
  • Grinding abrasive materials
  • Level screed
  • grinding natural stone
  • Removal of formwork transitions and epoxy resin coatings
  • For removing formwork transitions and concrete runs on freshly concreted surfaces.
  • Adhesive residue, screed, plaster, mortar, abrasive sand-lime brick, sandstone, fireclay, asphalt.

Note:

The softer the material, the harder the binding of the segment, and vice versa.

The manufacturers do not explicitly indicate the hardness of the segment. We therefore recommend that you take the material specifications into account.

PKD cup wheel compared to diamond cup wheel

The main difference between a classic diamond cup wheel and a polycrystalline diamond is that the segment mass is made of synthetic diamonds. Ergo, you no longer grind with this tool, but you mainly peel wood, plastic, and non-metals.

The decisive advantage is the high wear resistance. In addition, the height of the concrete grinder can be adjusted to suit.

The level of efficiency is so high and the design is chosen in such a way that the cup wheel does not clog, even with smearing materials, and the hardest materials can be peeled off effectively.

For this reason, a PCD cup wheel is preferred for putty, old thermoplastic coatings, carpet residue, adhesives, and vinyl floors.

There are few handicaps.
The multi-crystal tool loses high cutting speeds. The reason is the brittleness and temperature sensitivity.

Depending on the requirement, both cup wheels can be used. An example of this is a solid coating that removes a thick layer with the PCD cup wheel in the first step. In the second step, a diamond cup wheel with a turbo segment is often used.

On which machine is a diamond cup wheel used?

A rotary motion drives the cup wheel. Predominantly one decides for the angle grinder and the concrete grinder.

However, there are several variants:

  • renovation milling
  • angle grinder
  • concrete grinder
  • floor grinders

Tip:

Don't work with a lot of pressure, because the tool's weight is sufficient (except for floor grinding machines). Otherwise, the mixture will become hot with the undesirable result that erosion and wear will increase.

Cup wheel for the angle grinder

The angle grinder is ideal for smaller grinding jobs around the house. Surfaces can be leveled quickly and easily with the appropriate diamond cup wheel.

Advantage of an angle grinder

The angle grinder is part of the standard equipment of a craftsman and do-it-yourselfer.
If you don't have one, there are already great and cheap offers from well-known producers.

The angle grinder is a reliable and flexible helper and is operated by man. Therefore, the advantage of being lighter than other machines is significant. You can work longer with it.

Tip:

Observe min. rpm - at least 6,000 rpm for a cup wheel with diamond segment at Ø 115 - 125 mm

Common sizes of diamond grinding discs for angle grinders

  • Cup wheel: 115 mm
  • Diamond Cup Wheel: 125mm
  • Sanding pad: 180 mm
  • Diamond cup wheel: 230 mm

The concrete grinder is a specially designed machine for grinding coarse and stubborn materials. This includes, for example, abrasive materials, very rough surfaces or surfaces that have been severely damaged by the weather.

Advantages of a concrete grinder

  • More power can be achieved compared to the angle grinder
  • The scope of the diameter of a diamond grinding disc of up to 230 mm and more is possible
  • A perfect number of revolutions and gear ratio enables efficient and gentle work.
  • The result is more effective work
  • Floor diamond grinding is possible

The correct assembly of a diamond grinding disc on the Flex

The selection of a diamond cup wheel for the Flex is determined by its mount. The manufacturers each have different versions in their product portfolio, which therefore requires the necessary attention.

Two bore diameters stand out: 22.23 mm and 25.4 mm.

These usually require clamping parts in the form of a clamping flange or a quick clamping nut.

Tip:

With a quick-clamping nut, you can do without a wrench and clamp the diamond cup wheel faster and more conveniently.

There are cup wheels with an integrated M14 mount for the angle grinder. In this case you can do without the accessories.

Work safely with a diamond cup wheel

It is always important to follow the recommended safety standards. When working with a diamond cup wheel, the risks at speeds of up to 12,000 rpm should not be underestimated.

Mathematically, with this factor, you move at up to 200 km/h.

With diamond cup wheels, the safety standard is the same as with diamond cutting discs. Well-known manufacturers have the diamond cup wheels tested by the German Institute for Standardization and are allowed to provide the products with DIN EN 13236 after passing the test.

This test specifies the requirements and measures to eliminate or reduce hazards in the case of grinding tools with diamond or boron nitrite.
