Buy cutting discs of all kinds at MyToolExpert

Definition: Most tools have a rich history. Originally, stones were separated with a hammer and chisel. As you can imagine, the work was arduous. Thus arose the striving for a simplified technique.

Cutting disc progress

A quantum leap happened in the 20th century with the high-speed cutting disc. Before that, the metalworking industry was characterized by traditional grinding and cutting discs with a material thickness of between 6-13 mm. In comparison, the discs have been optimized to date and are known to achieve better performance (service life, etc.) with a material thickness of just 0.8-6 mm.

We offer you these different types of cutting discs:

The material to be processed determines which cutting disc is used. The fact is: there is no disc that cuts across all material groups.

In summary, there are 3 main groups:

  • Synthetic resin-bonded cutting discs (e.g. grinding disc)

Or better known as flexible discs, cutting discs or corundum discs

Construction of cutting discs

A cut-off wheel is circular, usually has a flat top and a hole (socket/thread) in the middle.
The disc is used as a tool on a machine for cutting or grinding a workpiece, either wet or dry.

At the beginning of the era, mainly companies with a focus on metal processing were supplied with resin-bonded wheels. Due to the completion of the cutting disc family, all trades now benefit from this invention and should not be missing in any well-equipped workshop.

There are two categories that are assigned to each main group.

The universal discs serve a wide range of materials, ensuring versatility while saving labor time. Or the special cutting discs that deliver a special character, such as better results or longer service lives.

Order these cutting discs for the following materials:

  • For stone (granite, marble)
  • For concrete
  • For tiles
  • For porcelain stoneware
  • For steel
  • For stainless steel (non-ferrous metal, metal,...)
  • For metal (aluminum, etc.)
  • For plexiglass
  • For ceramics (bricks, etc.)
  • For plastic

We sell cutting discs for machines with these characteristics:

If you want to cut with a specific machine, that is the basis for threads, the wheel size, as well as rotational speed and power.

Principle: The harder the workpiece to be machined, the more powerful your machine needs to be.

Overview of cutting disc diameters

As with the various shots, there are diameters of varying relevance.

Outer diameter:

  • 76 mm
  • 85 mm
  • 115 mm
  • 125 mm
  • 180 mm
  • 230 mm
  • 300 mm
  • 350 mm
  • 400 mm
  • 450 mm
  • 500 mm
  • 600 mm

Notice: Look closely at the information on the cutting discs. Due to the tolerances, the diameters specified by the manufacturer deviate somewhat, but these are negligible in practice.

Example:

The machine indicates the dimension 22.23 mm and the cut-off wheel shows 22.2 mm. That's no problem - you can use the disk.

Synthetic resin bonded discs

The discs consist of a base material and are pressed with various fillers (powder resin/liquid resin) under the influence of heat and fibers.
The type of use determines the selection of the mixture. This creates cutting discs with different thicknesses and diameters.

The mixture or the type of grit has a significant influence on performance because the abrasive grit is responsible for removing the material.
Synthetic grain types are not only contemporary, but they also offer noticeable benefits.

This affects hardness and wear. In addition, a reliable constant in their properties is achieved and makes use in areas that were previously unthinkable possible.

Abrasive grain index

Generic name Flex and its connection to cut-off wheels

Colloquially, a certain designation has established itself. The vernacular never talks about a synthetic resin-bonded cutting disc or rarely about abrasives. Usually we talk about cutting discs for flex, discs for flexing or thin flex discs. Originally a brand name, Flex is considered to be the inventor of the angle grinder, or better known as Flex.

Durability of the resin-bonded cutting discs.

Important: Abrasives have an expiration date

Since this is a natural product (filler), the cutting disc also has to face the aging process. The reason is the decreasing stability.

Each manufacturer must display the expiration date on the product or packaging.

Structure of a diamond cutting disc

The diamond cutting discs consist of 4 elements, the blade body, the segment, the diamond and the connection between the segment and the carrier.

The right choice and harmonious fusion by soldering, welding or sintering are decisive for the performance characteristics. This is how universal cutting discs or diamond discs for special applications in concrete, natural and artificial stone, highly compacted composites on and other materials are created.

Structure of a hard metal cutting disc

The carrier body or core blade of the carbide cutting discs consists of tool steel or hardened tool steel. The hard metal granules form the segment, which is also known as the cutting medium.

Safety requirements for cutting discs - the voluntary standard

The general benefit of the high-speed cut-off wheels had various effects. On the one hand, the economic boom was promoted and, on the other hand, the user was exposed to new risks.

Thus, among other things, a voluntary test for risk prevention was created in the German Institute for Standardization. The safety standards and quality features ensure that cutting discs withstand the strong centrifugal forces and loads.

The tools with the standard correspond to the “state of the art” requirement and have established themselves on the European market. In our opinion, the standard is indispensable, so that you will only find tested products in our shop.

  • Seal of quality for abrasives: EN 12413
  • Seal of quality for diamond cutting discs: EN 13236
  • Seal of approval for carbide cutting discs There is no specified safety standard here, but well-known manufacturers use diamond cutting discs as a guide

Choose the right cutting disc for your material

Note:

The harder your workpiece, the harder/tougher your tool needs to be.

The element can only be processed with synthetic resin-bonded cutting discs.

Which cutting disc for metal?

If you are looking for a stainless steel cutting disc, abrasive for aluminum or a metal cutting disc, you should be aware that metal is a collective term and includes steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals (metals other than iron = non-ferrous), such as aluminum and copper.

Normally we advise you to determine the metal exactly. Our results show that you can use a "corundum cutting disc" with peace of mind.

The much more important question to ask yourself is:

  • How fast do you want to work?
In addition to the selection of the machine, we recommend that you also consider the thickness of the cutting disc, e.g. cutting discs with approx. 1 mm.

  • Is downtime important to you?
The pores between the abrasive grain and the bond act like cooling chambers, which also promote the efficiency of chip evacuation during grinding. If these are too tight, additional friction and a higher temperature occur. If the chambers are too large, natural cooling is reduced. Both affect the lifespan.

  • How precise should the cutting pattern be?
The finer the grain, the more precise the result

Which cutting discs for stone?

Abrasives were also used here before the era of diamond cutting discs.

After the diamond for tools was ready for the market, diamond cutting discs are typically used today. Due to the high demand, requirements and variety of stone types, the cutting discs with diamond have been optimized and adapted accordingly.

You can find the exact recommendations here “Cutting stones with diamond cutting discs”.
